Lots of little bitty pieces!!!! I couple months ago I found out that Bonnie Hunter was going to be in Kentucky about 1-2 hours south of me. A friend from my Senior Center had said to me that it was on her BUCKET list to go to a Bonnie Hunter class. So we did! Garden Party is the name of the quilt and let me tell you it is a LOT of little blocks.

I think She liked it. I know her mom did! I made the quilt longer and narrower so that it would fit a dorm bed. I hope it fits Anyway. It wraps around her well anyway.
I changed my email address and I don't think this one will let me get responses..... I will have to work on that.... Maybe open a new email address to link w my email...

I finished quite a few quilts since I posted last but there are no pictures on this computer to link with this post....

I finished Bonnie last mystery quilt and 3 queen sized quilts for my DD's I do want to post those, but will have to do it later.Carolyn Sullivanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16591809412054783126noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142516113673304289.post-90922157731502584252016-01-18T08:24:00.000-08:002016-01-18T08:24:05.605-08:00Finishing a UFO, and what I have learned about machine quilting

I had this UFO (Un Finished Object) on my shelf for awhile. It came from American Patchwork & Quilting, From June of 2009! I think I actually started on it that summer. It's called Summertime Blues, pattern by Jill Finley of Jilllily Studio you can see her page here: Jillily studio.

I didn't like the quilting the stitches were too erratic some tiny and some huge..... I was having a lot of trouble with the stitch regulator which was going bad. I had become quite attached to it. Since then I have a Norton Fun Quilter 17. and mostly quilt w/o the stitch regulator.

A couple yrs ago my mom helped me by taking out a lot of the stitches... it was very tedious. I have learned a lot about quilting since I started this UFO, and now finished it. As I finished the binding I thought about what I had learned.

#1 don't keep doing something if it isn't right, stop and figure out what... otherwise you will have to rip out all those stitches. Which we did a lot of but I didn't remove all of them.

#2 I do pretty darn good w/o the stitch regulator. I requilted some parts of it, and also the background was free motion.

#3 pay attention to your tails. When I started a stopped on this originally I just did a few stitches in the same place. I didn't pull my thread up after doing a couple of back stitches. I had been taught to 'take some stitches in place' and cut the thread.... It leads to knots on the back of the quilt though.

#4 Pull your tails up and tuck them in as you go. I use this method you can view it here : burying threads, by K Grace Howe this is not the one I originally viewed, but it's the same method. There were a lot of tails on this UFO that I had to bury, and today I found another one.

#5 washing makes a lot of "errors" disappear. I don't wash my fabrics before quilting. One of the advantages for this quilt was that some of the upper green thread was showing through. most of that disappeared with washing.
I still haven't labeled my quilt. And I need to do that.

Went to Pilates, came home to go to the grocery, and run around a bit with DH to see some Christmas stuff.
Saturday I insisted on at least CUTTING out all of my pieces. Then we went to several antique malls in the area. A LOT of driving to do all of that.... stopped in at a quilt store
and bought some fabric (1/2 price) for a future project. Then on to YET another antique mall. He did buy another Bridge Lamp. Got a great price on it. and I found some buttons for a friend of mine. Came home and threw some dinner together. Then proceeded to make 3 batches of cookies for when the grands come over TODAY to bake cookies!

DH has a special kind of bar cookies he likes (they are OK) But I was really tired by that time and while reading the recipe I read 2 tsp of salt.... no it was 1/8 tsp of salt, and 2 tsp of cinnamon!!!! I tasted the dough after they were in the oven as I was cleaning up.... YUCK! he is trying to save them. He hates to waste anything.

I promised to make him another batch.

Here's a link to some Featherweights from a previous post that I need to sell. I have too big of a herd. They have been sewn with by me after cleaning and updating small repairs. Scrollwork-Featherweights for sale
Didn't do anything with the mystery quilt that Bonnie Hunter is doing. But I'm ready to start clue 3 today.

As you can see I did ALL 80 of the santa hats WRONG, I cut the triangle too big, and had to rip, cut down and resew! It took me another whole day to catch up!

Now I'm on to the third Clue, done a lot of cutting. A lot of Christmas activities too. SO AGAIN, I am behind.
and to top it all off we are having spring like temps! I really want to go outside for a walk or something!

so here's clue 1Complete!

I try to pick up some ever so often and do the repairs, get them sewing well and resell them. However I've had these for almost a yr, and have not gotten around to fixing them up, until recently. I'd like to get $325 plus shipping, and I take Paypal of course.
I did as I did for the above, and DH (who is an electrician) has checked over the electrical on both.
As for what I'm working on it's been giving me Headaches... Some times I think I might have a seizure it's so vibrant. 2 of the Granddaughters moved into new bedrooms and they painted them PINK. That alone is vibrant, but they have purchased them ceiling lights, and the pattern reminded me of one that I had gotten in the mail, a free pattern so that I would be enticed to buy a quilting magazine.
It was one of Fons and Porter patterns called Milky Way. So one quilt was supposed to be white, black and PINK as in FUSHIA or HOT pink.... The other Just Pink and Purple. Only now she is not sure about the pattern. It's a pending problem.

Here's a pic of the one.
Since I took that picture I have added 4 squares of the pink and black and white fabrics and then a border of black. I will be quilting it next week.
Here's a picture of the quilting a used a square Ruler from Quilters Rule. It's not perfect, but neither am I!
I continued on w all of the BB quilts. All but one has been given to the parents & BB's. The first is a quilt for my niece. it's a Wondering Path often called something else but I don't like that name. Mostly in Batiks. I wrote about this in another blog post. you can read about it here

I have done 3 Of Bonnies "Emery Stars". This is the second one I just LOVE this BB picture too.
She is just so enthusiastic!
The left Emery Stars I don't have a picture of the BB on the quilt yet... New parents! I love this pattern, as I used most of my Bonus triangles for it. I think I have another one set up with all the black and neutrals from GI.

This last one is of the Grand Illusion.... all the farther I have gotten. I hear that a local quilt store is doing a Saturday UFO in Feb... I think I might have to join. Just to get them DONE.

So I'm using 'my' plan for Borders as a leader ender project for Celtic Solstice while I assemble my GI mystery quilt.
Nothing fancy on the quilting, Just wanted to Get Them Done! This is a quilt for my niece I think I promised her one 2 yrs ago... I'm not that fast but this went together well. Its often called Wanders Path.

This is a baby quilt that I whipped up with out knowing who is the recipient. I just wanted to use up some of my scarps. It's going to my yoga instructor who had a BB on Dec 24.
and the back of the quilt with a picture of the embroidered label.

Now I'm working on another BB quilt using the bonus triangles from Bonnie Hunters Mystery quilt, Grand Illusion:

This is all the farther I have gotten on it.

So I started to work on an older quilt that will be for one of my nieces. It's mostly in Batiks, and I scored some on a sale BOGO! can't beat that! During the GI hiatus, I cut the remainder that I needed out, and started putting them together.
I'm not sure of this layout yet this is my first placement.
I might move some around.

Then came this past w/e. We had to go do some Christmas stuff. I was also making batches of Cookie dough for what my DD call "Cookie Armageddon".

Some of the Grands came over and were very good at making the cookie balls, and conservative w the ones they ate and brought home.
Truthfully last year was Far Worse.

Friday I was able to start sewing and Saturday. But this is all the farther I have gotten on the GI mystery quilt.

Step one and 2 were challenging, but I made it through them. Step 3, I though was going to be a breeze, but still I had some difficulty getting them done and with the black square in the left hand upper corner. Once I did it in the middle.
OPPS where's that ripper!

Towards the end I was scrambling to find enough neutrals, then found
whole box full of cut 2" squares and rectangles!

There was one point when I was approaching the LAST SET, that I dug through my trash to find some more green. Not wanting to cut anymore of the strips to get 1 square.
I also was able to find a Large box to put all of my finished pieces into.

Hi all I've had a lot of issues getting photo's to load.... it's a search and find thing. I posted on FB and Janet Mercer helped me out. As I've been unable to post pic.... Now to go back and ADD pic to some older blogs!
We went to the Horse parade in Lebanon, Ohio and also to Waynesville, Ohio. I saw a few antiques sewing machines there. None came home w me, but I know many are interested in machines. I thought the note on the treadle was interning. "key and 2nd shuttle and mysterious accessories in #13 locked case"! LOL it was $175! Not sure if it was worth it.
Also this WILCOX machine and wooden case. I think the price was $350. I could be wrong. I'm not that interested in it. They also had a very pretty 1950's feather weight, but it was pretty expensive for my taste. $350. I didn't see a box and now am upset that I didn't ask.
BC later in Waynesville I did see this worn to silver and beat up case of $250. I think it should have been for sale fro a lot less.

I didn't choose any of my fabrics with Bonnie's paint chips, I decided the Friday it started, when I found these at a shop in Madison, Indiana. It's called 'Fabric Store'! None of his fabrics are recent, looks more like buyouts. But I'm OK w that. Here's what I got there :

This is step 1 completed, and the beginnings of step 2.... Now enough of this fiddling around... I've got some sewing to do!
Carolyn Sullivanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16591809412054783126noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142516113673304289.post-29134487856131880872014-06-19T11:10:00.000-07:002014-08-15T11:26:15.960-07:00Mid June, the garden is doing well this yr. Peas have been producing enough for us, and the green beans look like they are ready to flower.
I did get a few salads out of the garden this yr, but no heads of lettuce. I really don't know how they are produced. I think earlier planting for one and less seeds for another. I pulled them up last w/e as we are now getting 90 degree temps. I knew that they would bolt. My Potatoes are growing like crazy. I have had to add wood to their raised beds 3 times! Rethinking my plan for next yr. As they are getting so high. I think I need to make a 4 foot high bin!

Quilting has been going slowly. I'm working on another donation quilt that is the Road to Arkansas design. I have several babies due in Oct and am thinking about how to use my scraps, and the numerous 1/2sq triangles that it has produced. So far they are too small for what I had planned. For the baby quilts.

I also have a baby quilt on the frame. I need to add the batting and pin down the top. So far this week all I have done is get the backing on the frame!Carolyn Sullivanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16591809412054783126noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142516113673304289.post-51857201157939984572014-05-27T12:26:00.001-07:002014-05-27T12:26:47.071-07:00It's been such a long time since I wrote a blog! WEEKS! WE went on a trip to Florida, I can't say it was a vacation, bc we are retired! (LOL we have nothing to vacation from!) the weather was crappy for the first 3 days. Although it was hot on Wed, the water was so rough it felt like we were getting beat up! Then storms came on and 2 days of cloudy windy rain. So what's a girl to do? we went shopping. I only bought fabric at one store and that was bc it was on sale. We drove to Dunedin, to Rainbow's End which is one of my favorite places, but I didn't see anything I wasted to buy. (that's a lie I want to buy the whole store, but I don't have a current project in need of fab.) Alma Sue however is another story I bought some sale fabric there and could have spent a whole lot more. Also drove to Clearwater and went to Country Quilts And Bears.

Then On the Friday it was clear and blue and WINDY high of 70 there was no way we were going to freeze at the beach. So what's a gal to do???? I started looking up quilt stores and found a link to the Old Sewing Machine Guy He has an awesome little museum, and he let me pick his brain about my featherweights. I also bought a plastic tube of grease for the machines that I have not been able to find locally, and an oiler that has a spout on it! It was a long trip to get to Ocala from Sarasota, but I thought it was well worth the trip. I think DH enjoyed it too.I saw machines there that I have never seen b4 and I was kicking myself for not having my camera w me. Other than the weather finally cooperating w us for Beaching and Floating (I don't really swim) I think it was the highlight of my trip.

He also has a fabulous repainted Featherweight. I loved it DH wasn't a fan of it. But he told us what all he goes through to get them painted. I really had never thought about it, but he takes all the 'guts' out of the machines and sands them all down. on the outside to prep the machine. That's such a lot of work! And of course then comes the re assembly after the coats of paint are reapplied, the decals, and the clear protective coat of paint. I truly had no clue as to what all it entailed! So thank you again Johnny Johnston and his wife! I can't remember your name but she showed us her sewing room, and her long arm NICE set up! I wish mine was so clean I wouldn't mind having people DROP IN!!!!

Since I've been home, it's hard to get back into the swing of sewing and gardening and cleaning. SIGH never enough time in the day. But here's what I've been up to.Except I Don't Seem TO BE ABLE TO ADD PICTURES TO MY BLOG TODAY!!!!
SIGH, maybe next time.Carolyn Sullivanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16591809412054783126noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142516113673304289.post-82349616805970530662014-04-22T13:56:00.002-07:002014-04-22T13:56:14.225-07:00Spring has finally sprung, the flowers are blooming, and the warmer... and cool breezes too are coming in through my window.

I've not been working too much on my quilts, as I have been working on my garden only to have the deer break in once again and ravish my plants! DH and I took up two posts. Literally pulled them out of the wet ground and replaced them this W/E, Then I replaced the deer fencing. hopefully reinforcing it enough to KEEP THEM OUT! My peas are up about 1 inch too.
I've almost finished the Road to Arkansas quilt for Linus. Pinned and needs binding sewn.

I really liked the Road To Arkansas pattern, and I can see me making it again. It's a great scrappy quilt, easy to do.

I bought an attachment for my Nolting 16" so that I could use rulers. I also ordered a Baptist fan ruler and used it on the Linus quilt to practice. Not too bad for a first try! Charity Quilts are so good to use up scraps, and to try new things with. Here's the ruler and the RULER MATE
Today I stopped in at Sam's club to obtain some frozen berries. They have the best price, Strawberries, cleaned & sliced! I found a present for myself A NEW IRONING BOARD! It's more stable than my old one, and is wider 18". I like that it is adjustable too. My old one used to be, but w age all things become less flexible!
I picked up a nasty cold that triggered my asthma and most of March I was ill.

However I still carried on and did a bit here and there on my quilts Now I have a top that is ready for the quilting, and one on the design wall. The picture on the left, is Trip to Arkansas, or maybe Road to Arkansas. I saw some one post a pic of it, and I was tired of making 4 patch charity quilts so I changed it up a little. It is all charity fabric donated to the local Seniors Center, w a few of my scraps thrown in too.

Then I have Judy's "Oh So Blue" that I saw in Quiltmaker Magazine. I knew I liked it. if I had it to do over again, I would choose a less busy light blue. However it still works. You can also see on the rt of the pic the red fabric I bought for the backing.

Here's a better pic of the borders. I really liked the pattern, it did take a little bit of thought to figure out what I was doing, but as I cut and marked the fabrics it worked it self out. I also liked having the borders "planned" for me and cut out when I got to that part. It is something that always stalls me. I don't seem to be able to plan ahead for that.Carolyn Sullivanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16591809412054783126noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142516113673304289.post-48966366800638273992014-03-14T19:15:00.000-07:002014-04-07T06:18:57.716-07:00Featherweights

Recently I commented on a FB post on Quiltville's open studio about several Featherweights that I own.
I have 6 and would like to sell 4 of them. So after messaging back and forth w 2 ladies, I decided I needed to write a new post w pictures of the machines I have for sale.

SOLD!
So here goes. This is a 1946 Scroll face. She runs well. I've used her, and despite the handle on the case it is a strong tape job! I have bought parts for my machines here: 221 parts and they are honest and have a fast turn around.Even for little screws for the bobbins! A new handle will cost about $20.00, but frankly I just didn't worry about it. It's true what they say, grey tape can hold the world together.
The next machine is a 1945 AG527124
She has practically no decals, but her box is nice and she runs! I actually took her to my senior quilt group last week. She was a little hesitant but after a few stitches, she was right there too! As you can see most of her decals are worn off in the front and there are a lot of pin scratches. However her box has been replaced at some time because it looks brand new. I'm offering her for $250.00
Millie Has been sold.

Millie is a 1949 machine that came to me with a seamstresses information, or at least it seems that way Her number is AJ192236. She has been used a lot, but still runs. She has a lot of attachments that I have no idea what they are or what they do! I really only quilt! Occasionally I might do a hem or a seam. She has a newer case, but for some reason it has a poke hole through it, obviously a SPINDLE problem. Millie has a lot of attachments and despite her (age) scratches on her decals, she still sews wonderfully. I'm offering her for $250.00
Once a quilt gets to this size I no longer can keep it on the little closet door I use for my design wall.
Hopefully I will get it done and on the Long Arm before the month is over. I have actually started sewing the larger blocks together. No fabric was bought for this quilt UH this year! LOL I actually bought these fabrics in December. Well maybe not as it came out in the Jan/Feb issue of Quiltmaker magazine.

She turned 16 this month. Hard to believe. Her aunt my DD3 loves to decorate cakes and made this one for her. I loved the 2 pics I took of it so I added it to the blog. It was tasty too!

Mostly because 2 of our 3 computers have either died, or are very ill! I have lost most of the pictures I had on the laptop. But am hoping to have the hard drive looked at and have them pulled off. Still I know I have lost a lot of things. I have an external hard drive, that was backing up both computers, but I can't seem to get the info off that for the laptop onto the sick computer. (really it just OLD). We did buy a new iMac mini, which is still in the box. DH was going to put it together, and use the monitor from the desktop. However my attempts to 'save' the info I have on it took 2 full days! now a month later, I'm still trying to "Find" my saved items.

While waiting to down load items, I have managed to quilt a donation quilt,
and one to make for the grandson. I don't want to leave him out of the process. I was thinking of making Bonnie hunters dancing 9 patch but I finally choose a pattern called Slanted triangles. I changed the design on the quilt for the grandson's quilt called slanting triangles. But I have decided to change the design as the directions are not accurate, nor was it big enough.
I'm amazed at all the quilters doing variations on it, color choices, design adaptions ETC. The FB group has been so busy it is a full time job to keep up with all of the posts.

I have to admit I can't even try to!

I'm really liking the quilt top. I've been ill w my usual winter sinus/Asthma/Bronchitis again. With the drop in temp below 30 since New Years I haven't even tried to go outside. Hence I'm sewing a lot. Still so many people are ahead of me :( I know it's not a race.!!!!

This AM I was feeling well enough to finally get my kitchen straightened up some. Then I tore into those last 5 blocks that were done wrong. See my cute pins marking my errors!

After lunch, and a breathing treatment, I plan on starting the quilt assembly. I have not decided on how to put the border blocks together. I know I'm not going to do Forest Jane Jacobson's design.( from the FB page) I just don't want to cut more blocks out. I don't have EQ 6 so I couldn't load it on to mine ( I have EQ4). But I saved her pic as a JPG, and was able to Print and study it.
I also want to finish the pile of WIP and ones that are in my head too! (there are at least 6 there in my head)

I've been working on Celtic Solstice. I have 4 blocks on my design wall and am thinking I should have stuck to the darker Blues on it. Some of my Blues are patterned and are too light. I've not put them together yet, and am thinking on it.

The large white triangles are facing the WRONG way, they should be pointy side in, I have changed that, but didn't take another pic.

Today I will sew some more on it, get some more of the blocks up on the design wall and shoot a few more pics. I love the subtle secondary designs that are going to be visual in this quilt.

I realized after I posted this picture that the points were in the wrong way. I kept looking at it and couldn't figure out what was wrong.

DH thinks these lighter blues need to be taken out too. I can see the difference when I put all darks up there. The secondary circles are showing up.
This post was actually written about 2 weeks ago! I can't even post on time!

So far since starting on the 3 pairs of jammy pants, I have bought more material to make a few more for the daughters of my DH. I've finished part 1 of Bonnie hunters mystery quilt

And started on Part 2

I've bought more fabric bc it was on sale, and planned in my head a new quilt, yet to be cut, just planning it.Probably will be buying more fabrics for it.

We also were dealing w a lot of snow for this early in December our winter has already started. The last 2 yrs have been lighter snows, truly not more than an inch. I think so far our snow totals are 6 in. maybe not officially, but that's what I'm shoveling.

This is actually a picture of the supposed "dusting" which for us was an additional 3" on top of the 4-6 we had the week b4. Lovely to sew while it's falling though

While I was out shopping this week/antique/junk shopping I came across a treadle, I don't know how old it is, but seems to have all of it's parts. The cabinet was interesting as it closed, and the sewing machine folded down into it. I thought it was pretty so I took some photos. I saw this at the The Covered Bridge Antique Mall. In Cincinnati, Ohio. I included the link in case anyone wants more info. I had to ask about the price, they said $175.00 The cabinet is in need of a cleaning and polishing, but is intact. Decals are pretty good, and the spindle parts look like they are all there. No idea on the age,
We walked to Times Square, Bryant Park (a few times) took a river tour, saw the Statue of Liberty
Another great thing that NYC and Cincinnati have in common is the Botanical Gardens. We both have one, and at Christmas they both have displays from Applied imagination. I was very impressed with his display this year at Cincinnati Khron, but also the vast display at the NYC Botanical Gardens.
We stayed close to the Garment district, so I have pictures of all the fabric stores I would pass going to and from the hotel. I was good though I didn't buy any! In my defense they were mostly fancy dress or suiting fabrics neither of which I'm making.
Any sewing I have done over the past 2 weeks has been to complete the 4 pairs of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle fleece PJ bottoms, the 3 pairs of bottoms for my Step Daughters, and one for my DGD. I do have some other grands to make jammies for, but they like to sew, I shall cut them out and see if we can't have a time at the machine together. They are all growing like weeds so I need fresh measurements.
